Praying Big Prayers for Healing
As I am sitting here this morning, I cannot stop thinking about the prayer requests at the women’s ministry meeting that I attended last week. The requests almost seemed like a collection of medical issues that people were dealing with. And not that there wasn’t any, but there was little feeling involved in much of it. A lot of prayer requests sound like, “Sally is going in for surgery on Thursday. Beth was diagnosed with X; pray that her doctors can find the right medicine to help her.” A list of ailments.
This all seems a little too robotic to me. Where is our faith in God? Where is our prayer for healing in His name? Where are our prayers for healing our hearts and asking God to work through each person’s pain? Where is our prayer to use the situation, and use us in the situation to bring glory to Him?
That, to me, seems more important.
Revelation 3:14-16 says this: And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation. “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. (ESV) I don’t want to be lukewarm! I struggle but I am going to keep trying to trust Him more.
I’ve been dealing with chronic migraines and likely something else for years and I have plenty of theories about why I’m dealing with this and am certainly frustrated that I have to. My husband frequently prays for answers and I told him a couple of weeks ago that I don’t care so much about answers. I just want to be healed. And I looove answers, knowing why and how things work. Praying to God for healing and being healed is much more important than going to a doctor and finding out why or finding a treatment.
God doesn’t always give us the answer that we want. Sometimes he has other plans for us and that is okay but, when we are praying, I think we need to pray in a way that only God can answer. Doctors already have the tools to match drugs to conditions and treat symptoms. God has the power to really heal our whole bodies and hearts and minds and souls.
As a society and as believers, I think, we need to have less FAITH in doctors and more FAITH in God. Doctors have their place but our faith should be in God. Let’s pray for healing FIRST, not just after doctors can’t find a fix with medicine or supplements.
I found this cute pillow on Amazon that would be multipurpose – cute, comfy and a good reminder! Who doesn’t need a reminder to pray big? I know I do.
Here is my challenge to you. Trust God more. Trust God completely. Pray big prayers. As my pastor says, Big Hairy Audacious Prayers (BHAP).
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24 (ESV) .
